Pawnee Buttes, Colorado

We hurried up to Denver to see Luke Combs last weekend and it was a blast. What we didn’t realize was that the range was going to get another snow storm the weekend of the concert and again during the week. It’s the middle of May so we were thinking most of the storms should be done with for the season and we could head up to the mountains but as this travel stuff goes, we had to adjust.

We ended up looking for areas away from the range which led us to The Pawnee National Grasslands in Eastern Colorado. It’s 193k acres and about an hour straight east of Fort Collins. It’s a huge area with grasslands for days as you can imagine, with a good amount of livestock and wildlife mixed in.

We found a spot just north of Briggsdale, Colorado and decided to camp there for a few nights and then reassess. There’s a bunch of dispersed camping out there and if you stay on the side that’s near Briggsdale we found that the cell signal for Verizon was pretty great. It got a bit windy during the day but overall it was a great spot to be for a few days instead of being in the snow and freezing temps at night.

After those few days we looked at the weather again and snow was still expected so we decided to check out the Pawnee Buttes for a few days. The Buttes are about an hour from where we were camping, most of it because of the dirt roads you drive in on to get there.

Once we got to the Buttes we drove in until we got to this overlook that was just above the trailhead parking lot. Plenty of space and a great view of the Buttes and surrounding area. This spot was a little more scenic for the Grasslands area.

We camped here for few nights, went on a hike around one of the Buttes, and made friends with the cows. The Buttes are a great spot to stay, expect a little to a lot of wind but overall a really relaxing place to be. Verizon signal was great there was hardly anyone else there until we left closer to the holiday weekend.
